Balancing ecological, economic and socio-cultural impact
Sustainable forestry is the management and maintenance of forests according to the principals of sustainable development and economic development that is conducted without the depletion of natural resources. Successfully achieving sustainable forest management provides integrated benefits to all. Reducing rural poverty and reducing carbon emissions are only a few of the benefits. Ranking 28th in the world for biodiversity, it is no surprise that Panama has 21 times more plant species per square kilometer than Brazil.
Increasing the production of sustainable forest products offers an environmentally-friendly path to strengthening local economic growth. Our goal is to educate the community of the productivity, regeneration capacity, and vitality of these practices. This process allows the communities to realize their potential to fulfill present and future ecological, economic, and social functions at the local, national and global levels. On your OLI trip you will see the importance of this work in all of the communities we visit and work in.
